Xi Jinping Most Powerful Leader Poised to Extend the Power – Xi Jinping, China’s most powerful leader for years, could remain in office forever after the Communist Party called for the removal of presidential term limits.
Xi, who’s also party chief and viewed as the country’s most formidable ruler since Mao Zedong, has been president because 2013 and the 64-year-old leader would need to step down in 2023 under the current system.
However, the party’s Central Committee proposed deleting from the constitution the stipulation that a president “shall serve no longer than two successive terms” of five decades, the official Xinhua news agency reported Sunday.

“I think he will become emperor for life and the Mao Zedong of the 21st century”, Willy Lam, the politics professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, told AFP. “If his health permits, he wishes to serve 20 years, which might mean until 2032 as secretary general of the celebration, and 2033 as state president,” Lam said.
The proposed change, which would likewise apply to this vice-president, will be submitted to legislators in the full yearly session of the rubber-stamp National People’s Congress starting March 5.
Xi was chipping away at the collective model of leadership which was promoted by Deng Xiaoping, the architect of the nation’s economic reforms in the 1980s. Xi’s two rebounds, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, equally served two stipulations, but he’s signalled bigger ambitions.
At the 19th five-yearly Communist Party congress last October, Xi unveiled a new seven-member Politburo Standing Committee — its best ruling body — that lacked some clear heir apparent to him. He was also given the regular second semester as party general secretary, a project which doesn’t possess an official expression limitation.
Xi also watched his eponymous political philosophy — Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era — included at the party’s charter, an honour only accorded to a previous leader, Mao, during his lifetime.
The Central Committee also proposed adding Xi’s “idea” to the national constitution, linking Mao again.
Some also see the effort as a way for him to eliminate internal resistance. A significant outcome of this 19th Party Congress has been that the decision to set a new anti-graft agency, the National Supervisory Commission, which will coordinate these investigations at all levels of government & expand its remittance to include non-party members. The Central Committees suggested that the list the commission as a brand new country member in the ministry.
